This medical student has been found dead in the flat of her ex-boyfriend who remains at large as the Chilean police continue to search for him.
Maria Isabel Pavez, 22, was found dead inside her ex-boyfriend’s flat in the Chilean commune of Santiago Centro located in the Santiago Metropolitan Region on 23rd December.
Pavez was last seen alive by her mother Lorena Zamora at their home in the commune of La Florida on 17th December.
The 22-year-old student told Zamora she was going to meet her ex-boyfriend Igor Gonzalez as the two still maintained a close relationship after breaking up several years ago.
After Pavez failed to return home, Zamora tried calling her but was unable to reach her phone so she contacted the police. Officers later confirmed that they found her body in Gonzalez’s flat.
According to reports, the victim told friends that she was meeting someone she met on the dating app Tinder which led to false reports claiming the suspect was a stranger she met online.
A preliminary investigation said that Pavez’s cause of death was a strike in her cervical area which left a 15-centimetre (six-inch) wound, immediately killing her.
Police are now searching for her ex-boyfriend who remains at large.
Gonzalez, who is Mexican, reportedly entered Chile illegally which makes locating him more difficult for the local authorities as they cannot confirm his identity and age or even source a photograph.
Family, friends and feminist groups attended the victim’s funeral on Saturday 26th December and demanded justice for her untimely passing.
Gonzalez’s current whereabouts are still unknown and police do not rule out the possibility that he has left the country.
Pavez was studying Obstetrics at the Diego Portales University.
