Thieves have broken into the Stasi Museum in the German capital Berlin and stole nine communist-era objects just days after organised criminals made off with a number of valuable artefacts from another museum in Dresden.

According to the police, the suspects “smashed several showcases and stole medals and jewellery” from the Stasi Museum, housed in the former secret police headquarters, in the locality of Lichtenberg in the north-eastern German capital Berlin.

A museum staff member reportedly discovered that the unknown thieves had gained access to the showrooms at around 10.40am on Sunday 1st December.

A police spokesperson told local media: “Following a preliminary investigation, the thief or thieves gained access through a window on the first floor.

“During the act, they smashed several showcases and stole medals and jewellery.”

It is believed that a total of nine communist-era objects were stolen from the museum, according to reports.

Meanwhile, the perpetrators made good their escape and the local authorities have yet to track them down.

Experts from the Federal Criminal Police Office have reportedly taken over the investigation.

The museum director, 64-year-old Jorg Drieselmann, said: “The perpetrators came with ladders and broke in through a window. A total of four showcases were taken.”

Drieselmann said that the stolen items were not too valuable and only worth “a few thousand EUR”, unlike the objects taken from the Green Vault museum in the city of Dresden just six days before.

Three of the showcases contained medals and items belonging to three former East German Stasi ministers, including an Order of Karl Marx and an Order of Lenin, while the fourth had a collection of rings, a watch and a bracelet.

The investigation is ongoing.
