A man in Turkey was arguing with his girlfriend in a cafe when he allegedly pulled a gun and fired it and the bullet killed the teenage waitress.
The incident took place in a cafe located on Sakarya Boulevard in the district of Kepez in the southern Turkish province of Antalya on 8th January at around 1.30pm.
The suspect, who has been named as Semih Melih D., was arguing with his girlfriend Sila P., who works as a waitress in the cafe. It is unclear what the argument was about, but things escalated and Semih Melih allegedly pulled out a firearm and fired it.
The bullet from the gun is said to have hit Sila’s friend and fellow waitress, Edanur Demir, 17, in the head.
Medics called to the scene took the seriously injured teenage girl to hospital by ambulance where she was declared dead despite the best efforts of doctors.
Edanur’s lifeless body was taken to the Forensic Medicine Institute morgue for autopsy.
Semih Melih D., who fled after the incident, was caught by the police in the province of Burdur.
The suspect, who did not at first mention his fight with his girlfriend in his first statement to the police, and told the incident differently, said: “I was just joking around with Edanur. I wanted to prank her with a pistol.”
He added in the narrative which did not mention the fight with his girlfriend that after the other waitress had told him ‘I am not afraid of guns’ he had “pointed the gun to her feet, then to her head”.
He added: “I didn’t think it would be like this,” without specifying whether he meant that he had not intended to pull the trigger or alternatively that he had not realised there was a bullet in it.
The suspect, who was referred to the prosecutor’s office after his statement, was remanded in custody.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
