This is the moment a young motorist drives his new car straight into a river while reading phone messages congratulating him on passing his driving test.

The incident took place on Laoping Bridge in the county of Meitan in the city of Zunyi located in the southern Chinese province of Guizhou while the young driver, identified as Mr. Zhang, was trying to read well-wishing messages from loved ones after just passing his test.

Reports said that the young driver’s vehicle was newly registered too.

In the footage, Zhang’s white car is seen entering a narrow bridge before suddenly turning left and driving straight into the river.

Zhang told local media: “While I was driving, I tried to grab my phone and read some messages while two people were in front of me on the bridge. I became nervous and turned left suddenly.

“Luckily, the car floated for a while. I couldn’t open the driver’s door so I had to kick open the door on the other side. Otherwise, I may never have got out as my hand was dislocated in the chaos.”

According to local media, residents helped Zhang get to a safe area before handing him some dry clothing items.

The local police organised for the car to be lifted out of the river by a crane and confirmed that the car was newly registered.

It is unclear whether the new driver is facing police action over the incident.
