A diner has been caught apparently slipping a cockroach into a restaurant burger in order to get a free meal.

Staff at Burgers Bar in Mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem were shocked when the client complained about the insect in his food, and they offered the unnamed man a free meal as compensation, according to reports.

However, not content with a free meal, the man then posted about his experience on Facebook, prompting the restaurant to investigate the matter.

After scanning the CCTV footage, which was later broadcast on Israel’s Channel 12, the restaurant owners realised that the client had apparently brought the cockroach with him.

Reports said that he had the insect in tin foil in his pocket and CCTV cameras recorded him placing it in the burger before going to complain to a member of staff.

A Burgers Bar spokesperson told Channel 12: “The owners took his complaint very seriously, we returned his money and gave him compensation for the meal so that he would leave with a good feeling.”

They added that the media attention has damaged the restaurant’s reputation.

The spokesperson said: “We received many complaints and vilification on our page and it caused real harm to the branch and our chain.”

It is unclear whether either party has reported the incident to the local authorities.
