This is the moment a man who jumped off a bridge to retrieve a 10-GBP tape measure given to him by his late wife is pulled from the thick mud below by rescuers with a rope.

The incident came after Nopporn Phuangraksa had jumped off a bridge into the muddy waters below in Chonburi, the capital of Chonburi Province in Thailand, after he reportedly dropped the tape measure over the edge.

Local media report the tape measure had been given to Phuangraksa by his late wife who asked him to keep it safe when she was alive.

In the video, onlookers can be seen peering over the bridge next to Phuangraksa’s shoes, which he had apparently taken off before leaping over the edge.

Onlookers had reportedly heard his cries for help after he became stuck in the mud and called rescuers.

The blacksmith can be seen lying in the thick mud before he wraps a rope around him which had been thrown to him by rescuers.

He ties a knot in the tope before he is hauled to safety covered in mud. He then shows off his precious tape measure before rescuers hose him down.

When asked why he risked his life for a simple measuring tape, he said: “Although I can buy a new one for only 350 THB (9.37 GBP), the measuring tape is very valuable to me. I don’t regret this at all. I’m just happy I was able to get my tape measure back. It will be OK after I have cleaned it and I will use it again. But I will be more careful next time.”
