This is the moment a lorry swerves to avoid a car as it suddenly turns into a service station cutting in front of it before the heavy goods vehicle overturns and slides on its side into the petrol station.

The dramatic incident was captured by a traffic camera on the Kunming-Chuxiong Expressway over the city of Chuxiong in south-western China’s Yunnan Province.

The images from 2nd March show the heavy goods vehicle, driven by Mr Yuan, travelling straight in the outermost lane of the motorway when the small white car suddenly cuts in front of him from the left-hand side.

The saloon, driven by Mr Chen, suddenly slows and begins turning into the petrol station at Chuxiong Service Area while apparently failing to notice the lorry in the neighbouring lane.

Mr Yuan, who was transporting 33 tonnes of rice, veers the front of his lorry to one side and overturns.

His crashed vehicle then slides into the petrol station but avoids hitting the saloon car which police said had four occupants including the driver.

According to the police, the fire service arrived and sprayed the lorry’s petrol tank to keep it cool and prevent a blaze.

They also found containers to siphon out some 300 litres of diesel from the fuel tank.

Heavy goods vehicle driver Mr Yuan suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his head and hands.

Mr Chen has been issued a fine of just 50 RMB (5 GBP) but also found fully liable for causing the crash, which is expected to see him pay damages.
