This is the moment a pensioner in a locked-down village strips down to his pants and swims across a dirty river in order to shop for groceries on the other side.

The unnamed resident of Ningbo, a coastal city in China’s eastern province of Zhejiang, is said to have refused a temperature screening when trying to cross a small bridge into the neighbouring village.

He reportedly does his grocery shopping at a fruit and vegetable market on the other side of the waterway, but he was met by health officials who were screening every individual on 7th February.

Witnesses said he refused to have his temperature taken and did not wish to apply for a temporary pass in order to leave the lockdown zone.

When officials in the neighbouring village barricaded the bridge altogether, the pensioner removed everything besides his pants and began swimming across.

In the video, the elderly resident can be seen placing all his clothing – including his surgical mask – on the other side of the barricade.

Witnesses appear too frightened to touch his belongings and can only watch as he begins doing the breaststroke to the other side of the canal.

He reportedly collected his items and continued to the market, but it is unclear whether local police were called.
