A man died and two people were injured when a police car mowed them down after the driver lost control during an emergency call on the holiday island of Mallorca.

A 36-year-old restaurant worker -identified as Mario Decandia – had just finished his shift at midnight when he was killed.

The injured victims have been described as a 35-year-old Polish woman and a 25-year-old Swiss man, also on their way home from work.

Local media reports they may all have been work pals.

Witnesses say the police patrol car swerved out of control as it raced through Paseo Sagrera, one of the busiest streets in the island’s capital, Palma.

It rammed all three victims before coming to a halt.

Four ambulances arrived on the scene and the victims were taken to nearby medical centres for treatment.

The woman was taken to the Son Espases Hospital in Palma de Mallorca with serious injuries while the man was treated at the Juaneda Clinic for less severe injuries.

The Swiss man was reportedly conscious state, but was said to be suffering from shock after the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
