Two Italian thieves have conducted a series of ram raids on shops in Taranto using a scooter.

The thieves were caught on this CCTV using the scooter to ram into a tobacconist in Via Lucania before kicking in the glass and making off with EUR 400 (GBP 365) last July.

The thieves have terrorized shopkeepers in the southern coastal city over the summer and are believed to have conducted at least two similar thefts in the area.

Police have now arrested a 28-year-old who is well known to them for similar thefts throughout the region.

In spite of covering his face, he was caught out by two distinctive tattoos on his leg and arm.

Investigators found similar clothes to the ones worn in other CCTV footage at the suspect’s residence.

He is now being charged with theft, criminal damage and handling stolen goods – namely the moped that he used in the July raid.
