This mum of two died in hospital after she was stabbed 11 times and suffered a skull fracture and collapsed lung during a heated argument with her husband who has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The incident took place in the neighbourhood of General Paz in the city of Santiago del Estero, which is located in the northern Argentinian province of the same name.
The 30-year-old mum, who has been named in local media reports as Maria Soledad Taboada, was taken to the Ramon Carrillo Regional Hospital where doctors confirmed that she had been stabbed 11 times and suffered a skull fracture and a collapsed lung.
But despite their best efforts, Maria, who was the mother to a young boy and a baby, died early on Tuesday morning (12th October).
Her husband Bernardo Florentino Diaz, 33, has been arrested on suspicion of murder for fatally stabbing her in a heated argument in which he also allegedly beat his wife.
The news site Cronica said the woman’s relatives have expressed their regret that they did not act before the incident as they had allegedly already seen the husband threatening Maria verbally.
The woman’s body has undergone an autopsy and public prosecutor Cecilia Gomez Castaneda is expected to make an announcement regarding the case in the coming hours.
The husband has been detained and remanded in custody.
The victim’s sister, named as Vanesa Taboada, is quoted as saying: “We cannot believe what we are experiencing, we want him to pay for what he has done, and not let it go.”
She also said that the 33-year-old suspect was “jealous and possessive”, adding that her sister “could not do anything without him threatening her”.
She wrote on Facebook: “Justice for my sister please. They took her life, her dreams. They left a baby and a child without their mother, a broken family.”
Pablo, the victim’s brother, said that the suspect “killed” the victim “in a terrible way”, adding that Diaz is “an unhappy man who left two children without a mother”.
He added: “He had been threatening her verbally for a long time, but we never thought he could do this.”
He also said that his sister “said it was all a joke, that he would never do it. I also considered it a joke.”
Maria’s son and baby have not been named and their ages are currently unclear.
