This is the moment a family of rats is seen noshing on leftovers in a hospital restaurant kitchen while a stunned customer tries to scare them away by meowing like a cat.

The footage leaked to social media was taken in the cafeteria of Yuncheng Central Hospital in the city of Yuncheng China’s northern province of Shanxi yesterday (27th April).

According to reports, a customer dining in the hospital food court spotted the family of at least three rodents – including a smaller rat pup – while looking into the kitchen of the business selling meat buns.

It is unclear whether any staff members were working in the food stand at the time, but the video shows the rats clambering over a metal mixing bowl while picking out leftover ingredients inside.

Bizarrely, the customer then tries to scare off the rats by meowing like a cat, but the rodents appear to ignore him, much to his surprise.

Yuncheng Central Hospital, which is a Primary health care facility based on China’s three-tier ranking, said its management was investigating the incident.

The food court, however, remains open for hospital visitors and health workers, reports said.

Yuncheng’s market regulator – responsible for consumer goods and businesses – said it had not received a formal report about the incident.
