A four-year-old girl has died in a sledging accident after setting off down a slope while her parents were not looking and plummeting down a steep drop.
The girl’s parents and grandparents were only able to look on in horror as the sled sped off down the mountain at the popular tourist destination Schladming in the Austrian state of Styria and then plunged off a steep drop.
The police confirmed that the little girl had been at the snow-covered meadow with her parents when the incident took place.
They said the family was originally from the district of Gaenserndor in Lower Austria and they decided to take a holiday to the Hochwurzen ski area.
The child was given a helmet, goggles, ski pants, jacket, and other winter clothing but they were of no help as she sped over 180 metres down the sloped meadow, picking up speed as she went.
She then fell about 15 metres over an embankment and sustained severe injuries when she landed.
The girl died in hospital despite immediate first aid and resuscitation attempts by her father and later medics.
The tragedy reportedly happened over the weekend that the victim’s parents and grandfather have been too upset to be questioned yet.
