This is the moment a car garage owner shoots an intruder breaking into his property before realising he has killed his own brother.

The incident took place in the Brazilian municipality of Goiania in the early hours of 26th May.

The car garage owner, who was sleeping at his workplace, was awoken by the sound of an intruder breaking into his office, and the incident was filmed on a CCTV camera.

The man, who can be seen breaking into the office, then goes towards the desk as if looking for something when his shot from behind by the garage owner, who emerges topless after apparently being woken from his sleep.

However, after shooting the man, who then fell to the ground, the firearm owner realised he had actually shot his own brother, 33-year-old Fabio Dias da Silva, when the light was switched on.

The fire brigade, which is also responsible for emergency medical care, as the crew includes trained medical personnel, was called to the scene, but was only able to pronounce the shot man dead.

An armed employee, who was at the scene shortly after the shooting and was also filmed by the security cameras, told the police that his boss shot the man without seeing who he was, as it was dark at the time.

He told officers that only afterwards did he realise that the man he had shot was his own brother.

According to the employee, his boss became distressed when he recognised his brother and he called the police and relatives himself.

When officers arrived on the scene, the garage owner was no longer there.

At the time of reporting, he had not yet reported to the police. However, officers had been in contact with his lawyer, who said his client would report later.

According to the police, the handgun with which he shot the victim was registered.

The police are investigating the case, but they do not yet know if the victim had entered the establishment with the intention of committing theft or another crime.

According to the police, the victim was on bail after being charged with receiving stolen goods at the time of the latest incident.

The investigation continues. The suspect has not been named.
