This is the shocking moment a fisherman reels in a threatened shark on a busy tourist beach.

The incident was filmed by onlookers on Corralejo Viejo Beach in the town of Corralejo located in the island of Fuerteventura in the Spanish region of the Canary Islands.

According to the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the school shark (Galeorhinus galeus) is categorised as vulnerable.

The video shows the unnamed fisherman reeling in a school shark on a busy shoreline before being reprimanded by beachgoers and returning it to the sea.

A furious woman speaking with what appears to be an English accent can be heard pointing out that the shark is an “endangered species”, saying: “Why are you doing that? Why have you done that?”

“Why do you all let him do that, what’s the matter with you? This is wrong! Do you know it’s an endangered species?”

According to local media, the police were called to the beach but the fisherman had disappeared by the time they arrived.

Even though the school shark is considered harmless to humans, the beach was closed as several others had been spotted in the area.

It is not known whether an investigation into the incident has been opened.

The school shark is a houndshark of the Triakidae family and is found in temperate seas at depths around 800 metres (2,625 feet) and can grow to lengths of around two metres (6.6 feet).

Netizen ‘Vicky Rodriguez’ commented: “Outrageous.”

And Vanessa Tajes Rodriguez added: “We are the most miserable race that has ever existed on this planet.”
