After being removed from his post he has now been found to have participated in an attack on the Punto Vivo bar in the city of San Nicolas de Los Garza, in the northeastern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon on 15th May 2006.

He was part of a gang that launched two grenades at the bar before running into the premises with AK-47 and AR-15 assault rifles and opening fire.

Four people named in reports as Oscar Villanueva, Israel Aguilar Rodriguez, Rene Espinosa Sanchez and Salvador Monarres Ruiz were killed in the attack while another 27 were injured.

Municipal police arrived at the scene to try to stop the aggressors, but during the chase the culprits shot more than 30 times at the cops before escaping.

Local media report investigators believe the attack was a revenge attack during a war between rival gangs of drug traffickers.

Two months later an arrest warrant was put out in Lira’s name and the authorities found he had crossed into the United States.

The Mexican authorities requested his deportation and the legal case has been plagued by delays.

Now, 13 years later the Public Federal Ministry of the General Prosecution have seen him sentenced for the brutal murders. He was found guilty of four murders, attempted murder, weapon possession and restricted cartridge possession.
