Brazilian goalkeeper and convicted killer Bruno Fernandes de Souza is opening a cafeteria with friends while serving his sentence under house arrest.
Bruno, as he is mononymously known, who once played for top-flight Brazilian sides Atletico Mineiro and Corinthians, was convicted of killing his former lover, model Eliza Samudio, in 2013.
He was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder, which took place in 2010, when he was playing for his home country’s most popular team, Flamengo, which subsequently terminated his contract.
Bruno, now 36, reportedly ended the extramarital relationship in 2009 when Samudio told him she was pregnant with his child and refused to have an abortion.
Samudio disappeared after suing Bruno for not supporting the child, named Bruninho, whom the goalkeeper had initially refused to accept as his son.
Her body was never found and her baby was discovered with Bruno’s associates in a slum in the city of Ribeirao das Neves, on the outskirts of the city of Belo Horizonte.
According to the police, Bruno’s cousin said Samudio’s body was chopped up and some parts were buried under concrete and others were fed to dogs.
Bruno admitted to organising the plot, but the allegation of using dogs to rip the woman’s body apart was never confirmed by the authorities.
The goalkeeper had been serving his time in a ‘semi-open’ prison regime since July 2019.
He was initially meant to return to Varginha Prison at night. However, inadequate facilities to accommodate prisoners coming and going led to him being kept under house arrest instead.
The former footballer is now planning to open a cafeteria in the city of Sao Pedro da Aldeia in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro with several partners.
At the establishment, due to open on 4th February, Bruno plans to sell acai palm products.
