END OF THE LINE: Zipline Owner Faces Manslaughter Charge Over Tourist Death

A zipline operator where a tourist filmed his own death as the wire broke during the ride is to face manslaughter charges.

Sergio Murilo Lima de Santana, 39, rides on the zip line before it collapsed and killed him in Canoa Quebrad, Brazil, on Oct. 10, 2022. One of the beams supporting it fell causing the man to hit the ground, he arrived at the hospital dead. (Newsflash)

Victim Sergio Murilo Lima de Santana’s horrific last moments were recorded as he filmed a selfie video on the ride.

The haunting footage – filmed at Canoa Quebrada in Aracati, Ceara state, north-eastern Brazil on 10th October – shows the 39-year-old plunging to his death as the wire fails.

A second recording made by his partner shows how a pole supporting the zip line collapsed with Sergio landing with a thud in a sand dune.

Sergio – from Belem, Para state, northern Brazil – was taken to a nearby emergency care unit but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Now prosecutors have ruled that the 35-year-old owner of the company, who has not been named, will be prosecuted for manslaughter over the tragedy, the third serious zipline accident this year.

After the tragedy, authorities in Aracati banned all zip lines in the municipality the next day.

A statement by the prefecture said all such mechanisms would be rigorously inspected prior to their reopening.
