This is the dramatic moment two suspected drug traffickers are caught after a police drone filmed them jumping into a river to try and escape the cops.

The incident was filmed by a Spanish National Police drone after the suspects were spotted on a boat on the Guadalquivir River near the Donana National Park located in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain on Saturday 11th April.

The video shows the moment the alleged drug traffickers swim across the river attempting to escape.

They make it to the other side but swim back as several police officers are seen waiting for them. A policeman helps them out of the river after he removes a duffle bag from one of them. They are seen handcuffed and on their knees a short while after.

It is unclear why they returned to the side of the river where the police were waiting.

The suspected narco boat, 10 metres (32 feet) in length is seen abandoned at the edge of the river before the authorities seize it.

According to the police report: “Both crewmembers on board jumped into the water after seeing the drone.

“The boat was heading towards open waters, presumably to go to Morocco to procure hashish. The operation was carried out by the National Police in the area, established to detect narco boats that sail along the river to get inland and unload drugs.”

The report goes on to say several coats, a GPS, fuel containers and hermetically sealed food was also found in the boat.

Local media report drones are used by the task force due to the area’s difficult terrain.

The investigation is ongoing and it is unclear if the suspects have been charged.
