Death Toll Rises As Teen Has Cardiac Arrest In Hospital

A fifth teenage football champion has died after the bus he and his teammates were on plunged off a 33-foot-tall bridge and landed upside down in Brazil.

Tragic Felipe Gabriel Silva de Souza died of a cardiorespiratory arrest at Adao Pereira Nunes State Hospital in Duque de Caxias early on 7th February.

He is due to be buried in neighbouring Rio de Janeiro today (8th February) surrounded by mourners wearing the jersey of his beloved Flamengo football club.

His grieving aunt Jessica Fagundes wrote online: “As we know the love Felipe had for Flamengo, we ask, to pay a last tribute to him, that you come wearing the shirt of the team he loved.”

Felipe, 16, suffered a head injury and a punctured chest when the bus he was returning home on plunged off a tall bridge in Alem Paraiba early on 30th January.

He was taken to the ICU of a nearby health facility and on 1st February, when he had been stabilised, he was transferred by air ambulance to Duque de Caxias.

He was due to undergo surgery but died before it could be carried out.

He and his pals had been returning from a football tournament they had won in Ubaporanga when the accident happened.

The other deceased were named as Kaylon da Silva Paixao, 13, Thyago Ramos de Oliveira, 15, Andrey Viana da Costa, 15, and 18-year-old Diogo Coutinho Vilar.

Twenty-eight teenagers and five adults (including the driver) were on board the ill-fated bus at the time. It is unclear how many remain in hospital.

Paramedic Guilherme Ferreira Rodrigues told local media: “They were returning from a tournament where they were champions, and unfortunately, this happened.

“They were happy, and most of them still had their medals around their necks.”

It was earlier reported that the driver had denied accusations that he was speeding. He had claimed he was cut up by a lorry before losing control of the steering.
