This is the moment a cute green iguana with a lead around its neck walks around with what appears to be a cannabis joint in its mouth in a clip that has sparked a police probe.

The incident, which was filmed in Monterredondo in the city of Bucaramanga in the central northern Colombian department of Santander, is being investigated by the local police.

The clip shows the little iguana with material tied around its neck and what appears to be an unlit cannabis joint in its mouth.

At least two young men are heard talking in the background. One of them says: “It is totally stoned, totally tied up!”

According to reports, the police know where the incident was filmed because it was mentioned in the footage, however they have not yet been able to identify the culprits.

It is unclear who first posted the video on the internet, but local media have been circulating the footage this week.

A police spokesperson said that it is possible the culprits could be charged with animal abuse.

Meanwhile, the local police warned residents not to give illegal drugs to animals as it could cause hallucinations and neurological issues, even death in extreme cases.

Local biologist German Fernando Pena told local media: “It is important to understand that these animals are not pets.”
