This 24-year-old maid captured on video slamming a five-year-old boy onto the ground has been handed an eight-month prison sentence for ill-treating the child.

The incident was filmed by an onlooker, in March, in the town of Ponggol in the North-East Region of the city-state of Singapore.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ang Siok Chen said the video later was widely shared on Facebook.

The event took place at around 10 am on 12th March in Edgefield Plains, Singapore when the tot took a ball and left his house heading towards the field.

The maid – who has not been named – hurriedly followed in a bid to pick him up before hitting him when he tried to break free.

As the boy tried to slip through again, the maid got frustrated and threw the boy onto the ground.

In the video, the maid can be seen picking up the kid twice only to slam him on the floor from a height, before she finally picks him up and walks away.

According to local media, the boy informed his mother, Lisa, about being slammed onto the ground by the maid and complained of injuries to his front and back though it is unclear how seriously the boy was hurt.

The boy’s mother asked the maid about the injuries, but the maid claimed that the child hurt himself while he was rolling around on the ground and she decided not to take the matter further.

However, two days after the incident, the child’s father, Lianhe Wanbao, came across the viral video on Facebook, and recognised both his 24-year-old domestic helper and his son. 

That is when the father rushed to report the incident to the police who then arrested the maid.

The helper refused to answer police questions or apologise for hurting the boy, but she later pled guilty to “ill-treating” the child and she has been given an eight-month prison sentence.

The maid had begun working for the boy’s family in November, last year and her job description included household chores and taking care of the boy. 

According to local media, they had a good relationship with the maid and treated her as a member of the family which made the video all the more shocking.

When the family learnt of the incident, the boy’s mother reportedly decided to quit her job as she feared that her son may suffer further abuse in the future by domestic helpers.
