This video shows a young boy attached to a chain allegedly by his grandfather for being ‘naughty’ sparking a child abuse probe by officials.

Authorities in the township of Huashan, which is in Zhenxiong County in south-western China’s Yunnan Province, revealed the boy has been cared for by his grandfather Mr Shi and his wife Ms Huang since the death of his father.

The nine-year-old’s mother also left the family and remarried, leaving him under the guardianship of his elderly grandparents who are both in their 70s.

Mr Shi told local officials his grandson is “naughty” and “doesn’t like doing homework”, but he does not have the energy in his old age to discipline him.

On 13th August, when he refused to do schoolwork and was restless, he put his left leg in the chain to stop him from running away.

He did not, however, bolt or anchor the chain to the ground, leading to relatives spotting the restraining device when they eventually visited them to play.

Officials with the Huashan Township Government said they began investigating after the video was circulated on social media.

They found the boy had not been injured, and that Mr Shi and his wife were no longer suspected of child abuse.

A statement on 15th August said officials had warned the grandparents not to use the inappropriate disciplinary method again.

Young Guoping, who was released from his chains the following day, is currently in his second year at Huashan Township Central Elementary School.
