This is the shocking moment a pet pooch is dragged to the top of an elevator and almost strangled after its lead got shut in the door.

Security camera footage shows how the poor pooch is pulled up to the top of the lift by its neck after its leash got stuck in the door and the lift started moving downwards.

The footage shows how the dog’s owner desperately tries to reach her pet while trying to wedge open the door with her body.

At the same time, her other pet dog also appears in distress at the situation.

The incident took place in a building in the neighbourhood of Canto do Forte in the coastal city of Praia Grande in the south-eastern Brazilian state of Sao Paulo on Monday, 26th July.

The dog eventually had a lucky escape after its owner called the building’s concierge over the lift’s emergency interphone and asked for help.

Residents of the building heard the woman’s cries and came to her aid. They helped her to free her pet dog before it could be strangled by its own leash, and it remarkably escaped unscathed.

Despite getting a scare, both dog and owner, who was not named, are now doing well.

The video has racked up tens of thousands of views and received hundreds of comments online. Facebook user Jorge Junior Leivas Amandio wrote: “These old lifts without sensors should be banned.”

Lourdes Facanha commented: “No matter how careful you are, accidents happen; no one is perfect. Thank God everything ended well.”
