This is the moment a black bear in the back of a pickup truck steals a bag of food before escaping with its prize in its jaws.

The incident took place in Olinala colony in the city of San Pedro Garza Garcia, in the north-western Mexican state of Nuevo Leon and was recorded by an onlooker in another vehicle.

In the video, the black bear (Ursus americanus) can be seen looking into the back of the pickup truck. The cheeky animal does not seem scared of the oncoming vehicle where the scene is being recorded from and instead rummages through the truck, emerging with a white bag in its mouth.

It is unclear if the authorities were called about the incident and there were no reports of the bear attacking anyone in the area.

Local media report it is not the first time black bears have been in urban areas in Nuevo Leon as they sometimes use residential zones to try to find food.

The authorities advised local residents to avoid approaching the animals and to call the emergency services if they spot a bear.

The American black bear is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as a species of least concern because of its widespread distribution and a large population estimated to be twice that of all other bear species combined.
