A suspected cannibal is on trial for eating three drinking buddies in the space of a year.
The unnamed man from the city of Arkhangelsk in the north-western Russian region of Arkhangelsk Oblast allegedly killed his three friends between March 2016 and March 2017.
During the course of the investigation into the victims’ deaths, the defendant reportedly confessed that he boiled his drinking buddies’ bodies and used their cooked remains as food.
He allegedly stabbed the three friends to death when they passed out from drinking too much alcohol, according to reports.
Local media said the suspected cannibal would then allegedly cut up their bodies before keeping his preferred parts for consumption at a later date while the rest were placed in plastic bags and dumped in a nearby river and lake.
As well as eating his drinking friends, the defendant devoured stray cats and dogs as well as birds and other small animals found on the streets, according to local media.
Reports said the defendant had been charged with double homicide in the past.
The Russian criminal code does not include cannibalism so the defendant is on trial for murder and using the victims’ body parts.
According to local media, he has been declared competent to stand trial by medical experts and is expected to either receive a 20-year prison sentence or life behind bars.
