A 78-year-old British man has been arrested in the Canary Islands by local police acting on a UK arrest warrant where he is wanted for sexually abusing minors and possessing child pornography.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was detained in the municipality of Antigua on the island of Fuerteventura in the Spanish Canary Islands where he was living temporarily.

According to local media, he was reportedly detained under a European arrest warrant on Sunday 28th June.

The British OAP is currently being held on remand in the central Spanish capital Madrid.

The police operation was carried out by officers from the Puerto del Rosario Police Station.

The European Arrest and Delivery Order, better known as the EuroOrder, was created to replace the old international extradition system among EU states.

Between 2010 and 2016, Spain reportedly extradited over 250 Brits to the UK to face justice for crimes committed in the country.
