A 65-year-old British man has been arrested in Spain for sexually abusing a seven-year-old boy while working as a teacher in Northern Ireland.

The suspected paedophile was arrested in the city of Cartagena in the south-eastern Spanish region of Murcia where he worked as an English, music and typing teacher.

According to a National Police statement obtained by Newsflash, the suspect allegedly sexually abused a seven-year-old boy at a school in Northern Ireland for over 18 months.

As his location was unknown, the UK authorities issued a European arrest warrant “to prevent him carrying out crimes against minors in another country”.

The press release also said that the suspect was convicted of carrying out 12 offences against minors in the 1990s, all of them in Northern Ireland.

He was reportedly jailed for 18 months and banned from teaching in the UK.

The investigation into the alleged sex attacks on the seven-year-old boy began in August 2018.

After gathering information, investigators said the teacher used his position to target the youngster.

While cooperating with the UK authorities, the Spanish police found out that the suspect was living in Cartagena.

Newsflash contacted the Spanish police and while they declined to reveal the man’s identity, they did say that he was 65 years old. The Brit had been found to be teaching in the Spanish city since 2004.

He offered private lessons for English, music and typing and “he had daily contact with children”, according to the statement.

The suspect was arrested on 14th July, but the National Police released the statement on 27th July.

The elderly man is being held on remand while waiting for his extradition to the UK.

Meanwhile, the Spanish authorities are also investigating whether the suspect is linked to any cases of child abuse in Spain.
