This German man with a cockatoo on his shoulder has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing his estranged wife to death in front of their two children.

Suspect Rudolf Herman, 42, was arrested after allegedly stabbing his wife Brigitte Herman, 38, in the breast with a 20-centimetre-long blade that then snapped off.

The Croatian couple who live in the town of Bad Soden-Salmunster in Main-Kinzig district which is in the German province of Hesse began arguing after she revealed she wanted a divorce.

The fight was heard by the neighbours at 5 AM in the morning. It took place in the kitchen of the family home where the woman was reportedly stabbed by her husband, who then fled. Also in the house at the time where their two children, a girl aged 13 and a boy aged 15.

Neighbours had called the police when they heard the screaming and then they heard the girl crying and shouting ‘Mum you are bleeding’.

When rescue workers arrived it was too late to save Brigitte and they could only confirm her death.

Prosecutor Dominik Mies told local media: “In total, the victim was stabbed twice. It is noteworthy that the blows were with such force that the blade of the kitchen knife broke off. This fact speaks for the considerable violence that was used in the attack.”

Her husband then fled in the car, but later turned himself in at a local police station.

He was brought in front of an investigative judge at the district court in Gelnhausen who ordered him to be detained on suspicion of murder.

The man has so far said nothing about the killing, and is using his right to remain silent until now. Police said it was not known why the woman wanted to end the marriage but added that they had found no evidence that she was in a relationship with anyone else.

Both of the children are currently receiving psychological care and a police spokesman said: “It’s not possible to know what they saw of what went on, but they certainly experienced some of the tragedy which has left its traces on them.”
