An Chinese man’s life has been bombarded with phone calls after pop star Avril Lavigne tweeted a phone number similar to his for fans to call her.
Mr Dai, from the city of Changde in China’s central Hunan Province, has the exact same number as the Canadian musical artist if you omit the plus sign.
On 12th October, Lavigne tweeted after completing the North American leg of her Head Above Water Tour: “Hey guys! Can’t wait to chat with you all! Make sure to click the link below and text me! My number is +1 (310) 740-8577!!”
A mad scramble ensued as fans from all over the world began dialling the singer’s mobile phone, with numerous social media posts claiming they had reached a voicemail recorded by Lavigne.
But Chinese fans who accidentally omitted the plus sign ended up calling Mr Dai, 24, whose Chinese number is 131-0740-8577 when omitting the international calling code for mainland China +86.
A screenshot from his iPhone also shows an Avril Lavigne fan who added his number on instant-messaging application WeChat, asking: “Hello, are you Avril?”
Mr Dai was bombarded with so many calls and texts that he had to turn off his phone.
He told Asia Wire: “I’m not using the SIM card anymore.”
In a social media post after the frenzy, Mr Dai wrote: “Please stop calling… Thanks a lot, Avril.”
