A 22-year-old businessman looking for a place to start his business died after he fell through the floor of an apartment as he was shown around by an estate agent.

Victim Matteo Battaglia had been viewing the property to see if it was suitable for his new business in Cosimo, in Ragusa province, on the Italian island of Sicily.

But he was seriously injured when the floor gave way beneath him and he plunged 3 metres (10 feet) onto the floor below on 8th October.

Paramedics rushed Battaglia to hospital but he died two days later of multiple injuries.

Comiso town Mayor Maria Rita Schembari, said: “Another tragic incident has deeply shaken our community.

“Matteo Battaglia, a young life cut short by a cruel fate, leaves us in sorrow.

“Despite this profound moment of grief, his family has chosen to transform this loss into a beacon of hope for others.

“They have decided to donate Matteo’s organs, a noble act that deserves our utmost respect and condolences.

“In recognition of this selfless gesture, I, along with the entire city council, express our sincere sympathy and profound respect.

“We will honour Matteo’s legacy by declaring a city-wide mourning day on the day of his funeral, the details of which will be shared with the entire city.”
