Amateur Footballer, 20, Dies After Falling Through Roof While Trying To Snap Selfie At Old School

A young man has died after he climbed onto the roof at his old school to take a selfie and fell through it to his death.

The incident took place at the I.S.I.S. Gobetti-Volta school in the municipality of Bagno a Ripoli in the Metropolitan City of Florence in the Italian region of Tuscany.

Roberto Frezza, 20, was rescued from the school grounds in a state of unconsciousness at around 4am on Sunday, 23rd January.

He was taken to the Careggi University Hospital in a critical condition and passed away on the same evening.

According to the newspaper La Nazione, Roberto and a friend scaled the school’s front gate because Roberto wanted to show the friend where he had gone to school.

However, he fell through the roof over a fire escape after apparently making his way up there to take a selfie.

The selfie-gone-wrong hypothesis is currently considered the most likely cause of death, as the deceased man’s mobile phone was found on the roof.

It was the friend who raised the alarm with the emergency services after calling for Roberto in the dark and hearing no reply, and later finding his body on the ground.

The police have questioned the friend, who has been named solely as A. L., as a witness and may question him again, according to local reports.

Roberto was described in local reports as a ‘golden boy’. He studied engineering and loved football, playing for amateur side Gallianese and supporting Fiorentina.

The police investigation is ongoing.
