This footage shows mysterious flashes of blue light lighting up the night sky followed by a large-scale blackout which sparked fears of an explosion and even an alien invasion.

The video taken on the evening of 17th November shows the city of Yueyang in Central China’s Hunan Province suddenly losing power as the blue light emerges behind the cityscape.

The driver who captures the eerie incident gasps in shock as all the street lights go dark, leaving the city in pitch black until the blue light flashes brightly once more.

Witnesses said the bright sparks came from Mahao Electrical Substation, with local media reports speculating about an “explosion”, while another read: “Are aliens invading?”

In a statement released a few hours later, the Yueyang Power Supply Company, which is under China’s State Grid Corporation, confirmed that the bright electrical sparks had come from the substation.

However, it said the streaks of light and subsequent power outages were caused by pieces of a corrugated metal roof which were blown onto high-voltage cables at the electricity distribution station.

The incident caused a partial malfunction of its equipment, with power restored roughly four and a half hours later.

No one was injured during the accident, which was caused by gale-force winds measuring 9 on the Beaufort scale.

Netizens have also continued a running internet joke about how Audis have exceptionally bright headlamps.

‘Tianyashi Jiaoyu Shouhaizhe’ said: “Has an Audi driver just turned on their headlights?”

‘Chen Ran Shi Wode Nvshen’ added: “The other day an Audi owner came home late. The entire village thought it was dawn and got up to work.”
