This is the moment a toddler playing on a moving escalator jumps up and down in pain after breaking his index finger in front of his parents.

The distressing clip from the city of Luzhou in China’s south-western Sichuan Province shows the three-year-old descending the moving steps ahead of his mum and dad.

The video from 1st May shows the boy bending down and appearing to be running his fingers along the skirting of the escalator.

However, as he reaches the bottom of the steps, he fails to remove his right hand and his finger is broken on the metal panel under which the escalator is moving.

The CCTV video shows the boy bursting into tears and being tended to by his mother, whose reaction turns from concern to horror as she realises her son’s index finger is broken.

Staff members direct the panicking family to the exit, with the boy taken to hospital for emergency treatment.

According to reports, the shopping centre has refused to compensate the family over the accident, saying there was ample warning – includings signs and stickers – asking guardians to remain alert regarding potential injuries to pensioners and children.

The boy is expected to recover function in his finger, but it is unclear whether his parents will take legal action against the shopping complex.
