This viral footage with over seven million views shows a quick-thinking commuter sprinting back up an escalator and preventing a runaway suitcase from bowling over an unsuspecting elderly woman.

The heroic act was captured on CCTV at Huangpu Road Station, which is on Line 8 of the Wuhan Metro in Central China’s Hubei Province.

The clip shows the commuter, who is wearing a white T-shirt and black jacket, nearing the bottom of the escalator when he turns and looks back up the steps at the commotion behind him.

He recalled hearing a loud crashing noise, and he noticed the heavy black luggage rolling down the metal steps right towards the woman standing several steps above him.

The video shows the escalator being stopped by a uniformed staff member Yang Yi, who has also noticed the accident.

However, despite pressing the emergency stop button, she is unable not stop the luggage from continuing to tumble towards the woman.

But the commuter dashes up the steps and extends his hand to stop the suitcase, sparing the elderly woman what may have been serious injuries.

“There wasn’t really much else I could do or think,” Yang said.

She added: “All I could do is stop the escalator.”

The heroic commuter was thanked by the elderly woman and reportedly refused to give his name before leaving to continue his journey.
