These images show a rare, captured Russian BMP-1AM ‘Basurmanin’ which they can be seen testing before it is used against its former master.
The footage shows Yurii Kochevenko, the Director of the International Centre for Countering Russian Propaganda and a soldier in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, showing off the captured vehicle and saying: “Lots of trophies have been captured by the Ukrainian Armed Forces and by our 95th Air Assault Brigade too!
“But this is something special – a BMP ‘Basurmanin’. Another instance where Russia has ‘no equals’.
“But this specimen is in perfect condition, straight ‘from the shop’! Now we are carrying out combat testing and tomorrow will go to crush the Russian occupiers!
“So we work and you believe in the Ukrainian Armed Forces!”
The footage shows the BMP firing its gun in the background as he speaks. It can then be seen driving on a road before opening fire again.
The images were obtained from the 95th Separate AirAssault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Friday, 9th December, along with a statement saying: “Russian equipment ‘switched’ to the side of the Armed Forces.
“Soldiers of the 1st Battalion of the 95th Separate AirAssault Brigade captured a BMP-1AM ‘Basurmanin’ from the Russian occupiers. As our soldiers said, during the battle the enemy simply abandoned the car, saving his life.
“The ‘Basurmanin’ turned out to be new and in perfect condition. Currently, the Zhytomyr paratroopers are ‘running it in’ and testing the BMP and soon it will work for the victory of Ukraine.
“By the way, this vehicle is a modernised BMP-1. It was demonstrated for the first time in 2018, and the enemy tested it already on Ukrainian soil after the start of a full-scale invasion.
“It is not yet known how many such ‘Basurmanins’ are in service with the occupier, but the Ukrainian military says that there are not so many of them. Therefore, such a trophy is even more valuable.
“Together to victory!”
The images and statement were also relayed by Kochevenko. They were also relayed by the Office of Strategic Communications (StratCom) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russia invaded Ukraine on 24th February in what the Kremlin is still calling a “special military operation”. Today marks the 289th day of the war.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that between 24th February and 9th December, Russia had lost about 93,390 personnel, 2,937 tanks, 5,912 armoured combat vehicles, 1,926 artillery units, 395 multiple launch rocket systems, 211 air defence systems, 281 warplanes, 264 helicopters, 1,603 drones, 592 cruise missiles, 16 warships, 4,531 motor vehicles and fuel tankers, and 164 units of special equipment.
Russia has claimed that its casualties have been much lower but provides infrequent updates on its latest figures.
