The overtaking driver tries to swerve back onto their own side of the road but it has no time to avoid the oncoming vehicle.
They crash head-on and are both knocked flying across the road, somehow missing the other car which was untouched.
Passersby alerted the emergency services and police, paramedics and firefighters raced to the scene.
It took rescuers 20 minutes to cut eight people from the wreckage of the two vehicles. They were then taken to hospital by ambulance.
Police later named the people in the car as driver. Omer O., his wife A.O., and their children Y.O., S.O., M.O., and E.O.
The pickup truck driver was identified as Ayhan D., and his wife, I.D., who was in the vehicle with him, was also injured.
Doctors said that the two drivers and the pickup truck driver’s wife were the most seriously injured and their condition is described as critical.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident which happened in the Selcuklu district of Konya.
Local resident Ali Celik said the junction was an accident blackspot and that people in the area had long called for road safety measures.
He said: “We appeal the authorities to take the necessary measures to prevent those accidents. They should put traffic lights in here or at least speed bumps to slow down cars.”
