This is the heartwarming moment a public bus driver picks up an injured stray dog and makes a detour to take it to the vets.

The incident took place in the district of Efeler in the south-western Turkish province of Aydin and was filmed by the onboard security camera.

In the video footage, bus driver Okan Can is seen stopping the bus to pick up a dog that appears to be unable to walk.

He then lays the dog down on the bus and continues on his route, continually checking on the pooch.

Can stops outside an animal hospital and runs in to check whether they will accept the apparently injured stray.

At the end of the clip, the driver is seen carrying the dog towards the clinic accompanied by several passengers.

According to local media, the compassionate driver changed his route to take the dog to the emergency unit of the animal hospital.

He reportedly dropped it off and then continued on his regular route.

Aydin Intracity Cooperative President Okan Yalcin told local media: “We are very proud of our driver. When we started our ‘driver of the month’ initiative, we were hoping to raise the quality of the service.

“However, we did not think that exemplary drivers would mean exemplary people! For this reason, I wish to thank our driver and the passengers who helped him.”

There have been no further reports on the stray dog’s condition.
