This former Argentinian police officer is facing a life sentence for torturing and then shooting an elderly married couple in their own home before stealing their money so that she could pay for her daughters trip to Disney land.
Sonia Rebeca Soloaga, 36, is accused of shooting a married couple dead and stealing almost USD 80,000 (GBP 57,500) from their home in Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, on 11th June 2019.
Oscar Ciruzzi, the prosecutor on the case, told the court that Soloaga broke into the home of Alberto Antonio Chirico, 71, and his wife Maria Delia Speranza, 63, on Eugenio Garzon Street in the Parque Avellaneda neighbourhood.
She then tortured the pair whilst demanding they tell her where they hid their cash, which they eventually did just to make the beating stop.
The suspect then allegedly collected almost USD 80,000 (GBP 57,500) in cash as other items worth around ARS 60,000 (GBP 528) from around the house.
According to local news site Cronica, after getting what she came for the ex-cop pulled out a pistol and pushed a pillow against her victim’s heads as a makeshift silencer before shooting them dead.
Soloaga denies all accusations and claims that she has never even been to the couple’s home, a claim that has been contradicted by the couple’s daughter Maria Florencia Chirico.
Maria told the court that her parents had previously complained to her about the suspect, saying she would often come into the house to use their bathroom.
She added that her mother told her Soloaga would often ask her questions about money which made her feel very uncomfortable.
The prosecutor believes that Soloaga was collecting information and killed the victims because they would have identified her.
The motive for the crime according to the prosecutor was a debt owed to the “Fun Time” company by Soloaga for a Disney land trip for her daughter’s 15th birthday.
The trial is ongoing, with the next hearing scheduled for Wednesday (23rd June).
