A Turkish man is facing three years in jail for hitting his newly married wife with a Teflon-coated pan and stabbing her after prosecutors did not believe him when he said she attacked herself.

Businessman Erkan Basboga, who works in a logistics and storage centre and owns several companies, married his 35-year-old wife at the end of July 2019.

The alleged attack took place in the north-western Turkish city of Istanbul where the couple was living on 6th September last year.

The 36-year-old man was having a meal with his wife of just over a month, named Zeynep Melis Basboga, when he flew into a rage over the fact that she had scratched a new Teflon pan while they were eating.

After the row, she stormed out of the family home but returned a few hours later when the argument started again.

This time, she said he had hit her with the pan and then stabbed her in the stomach.

Basboga was hospitalised, and medics raised the alarm with the police who quizzed the husband.

However, he claimed that during the argument she started cursing him and then attacked herself, denying he ever assaulted his new wife, according to reports.

After the investigation, an indictment was prepared against Erkan Basboga for ‘deliberate injury’ with prosecutors demanding a prison sentence of three years.

The case will be heard at Buyukcekmece Criminal Court of First Instance.

Regardless of whether he is convicted or not, he is reportedly facing another court case after his wife filed for divorce through her lawyer Serdar Oktem.
