This 3,000-year-old rock formation called Avdalaz Castle – considered one of the world’s first multi-storey apartment complexes – has continued to attract hordes of tourists during the pandemic.

The ancient site is located in the village of Ayazini in Phrygian Valley located between the Turkish resort cities of Eskisehir, Afyonkarahisar, and Kutahya.

The images show the large rock formation created by ancient civilizations by carving into the tuff rock to create the multi-storey settlement which contains numerous rooms on each floor.

Local media said Avdalaz Castle is five storeys high with an approximate height of 30 metres (98 feet), which accessed by climbing a ladder from inside the settlement.

The site is reportedly considered one of the oldest multi-storey housing complexes in human history and it is believed to have been used during the Phrygian, Roman and Byzantine periods.

Ayazini village leader Bekir Yilmaz said the castle attracts significant interest from tourists who travel to the region due to the site’s historical importance.

Avdalaz Castle still attracts between 200 and 250 tourists every day despite the ongoing pandemic, according to reports.

He added: “Tourists are surprised when they see such a mysterious place. The region is worth visiting for its nature, history and atmosphere.”
