The shocking picture emerged as police in Dinslaken, North Rhine-Westphalia, investigate the youngster’s last days alive locked in a cellar by her parents.

The girl is seen in the haunting snapshot sitting in the camping cart facing another child at the other end as they wave at the camera.

Both their faces were obscured before the picture was released by officers searching for the abandoned cart.

Local media identified the snap as the “family’s children, playing happily”.

Investigators say the terrified youngster had been tortured in the cellar at the family home as a punishment.

Police, local media reports, believe her parents left her there days before she choked on her own vomit while eating a bowl of porridge.

Wensing admits dumping his daughter’s body in the Rhine-Herne Canal on 1st October but only confessed five days later.

Both Wensing and the girl’s 39-year-old wife, Maja, have been arrested by police investigating the death.

The girl, named only as L., was found by police divers at the bottom of the canal on 7th October, a day after her father’s confession.

Now, police are hunting for the camping handcart they believe was used to carry the girl’s body to the waterway.

Police have appealed for information about the cart, which they believe was dumped after its grim journey to the canal.

A spokesperson for Duisburg Police said: “Duisburg Murder Commission is looking for a foldable handcart that could have been used to transport the killed girl.

“Who has seen this handcart in the Kaisergarten area at the Rhein-Herne Canal in Oberhausen between 30th September and 3rd October?

“It could have been pulled by the suspected married couple or by one of them.”

They added: “Who is aware of its whereabouts or can give evidence concerning one or several individuals who pulled it at the mentioned time and location?”

In an earlier statement on 13th October, Duisburg state prosecutors said: “The Duisburg Murder Department arrested the 39-year-old mother of the child in her apartment on 12th October.

“The crime officer’s investigations regarding the child’s father brought strong evidence indicating that the parents jointly and deliberately tortured and eventually killed the child.”

The girl’s grief-stricken friends left pictures and cards with heartwrenching messages like ‘Fly as high as you can!’ and ‘We love you!’.

Her parents’ two other children are in preventive custody as the investigations continue.
