This is the moment two men launch a violent attack on a motorist stuck in traffic just to steal his mobile phone.

The incident was filmed in the city of Johannesburg in the north-western South African province of Gauteng and uploaded to Twitter by netizen Reneilwe Sekgobela where it has been seen 137,000 times.

In the clip, two men are seen talking to the owner of a white car stuck in a traffic jam through the open window.

The camerawoman says: “Oh what, a robbery right in front of us.”

She adds: “Why aren’t people getting out to help?”

Her male companion then says: “They take the phone.”

As she gasps, one of the men sticks his upper body through the car window and appears to assault the driver as other motorists in the traffic jam do nothing to help.

Sekgobela accompanied the video with the message: “Literally just witnessed a robbery on Malibongwe & Oxford road. Two guys walking like normal civilians. Be vigilant guys.”

She helped the victim afterwards, saying: “We were only able to help him once those guys left, we offered to call anyone for him or drop him off so he could get his spare keys.

“He got beat up badly though. The car assistance people came and helped him too, I hope he’s okay now.”

Meanwhile, police spokesman Makgowanyana Maja said that the incident was not reported and therefore a case had not been opened.

He confirmed that a probe will be launched if an official report is made.
