Pic Shows: Vehicles confiscated by police; A video showing Chinese police destroying a confiscated purple Lamborghini and a host of other pricey cars has members of the public wondering 'Why?' The Public Security Bureau of Heyuan City in South China’s Guangdong Province held its 18th destruction of impounded vehicles on 13th December. Footage from the police car park shows dozens of vehicles including a Lamborghini, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz being lined up and then smashed to pieces by an excavator. The scoop of the digger crushes the supercar’s roof and folds its bonnet like a piece of paper. Numerous other vehicles impounded by the cops included Range Rovers and Toyotas, the images show. Authorities say a total of 5,047 vehicles were destroyed on the day. Amongst them were 237 cars, 3,984 motorbikes, and 826 mopeds, all of which were either seized for infringements or towed away after being written off. Social media users have questioned the police’s decision to destroy the cars instead of repurposing them. ‘Xing Xiao Rourou’ wrote: "If you don’t want them, why not auction them?" ‘Xuexi Yao Xiangshan’ added: "No matter how rich our country is, we can’t waste resources like this!" Officials in Heyuan, however, insisted that the vehicles all failed to meet road-worthiness standards. They said it meant therefore that there was no other option but to destroy them. Netizen ‘Yibei Kaluli’ joked: "Can I at least have one of the windscreen wipers?"
