Portugal Pres Goes For Dip In Sea With Supporters

Portugal’s president has been snapped topless at the beach in a face mask and taking socially-distanced selfies with supporters as the country opens up its coastline for the summer season.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was snapped at a beach in the Cascais municipality in the Lisbon District of Portugal taking advantage of the upswing in temperatures to cool off in the ocean.

In the photos, Sousa, 71, can be seen topless in the water and taking socially-distanced selfies with supporters whilst wearing a face mask.

Local media report the president went for a swim in the waters before speaking to supporters and chatting to some reporters at the scene.

He said that he had not been for a dip in the sea “for two and a half months,” saying that the water was “nice and warm”.

Portugal’s beaches are open for visitors, but beachgoers must respect social distancing nor,s. Locals media report this weekend saw thousands visiting beaches as temperatures reached 30 degrees.

The country reportedly plans to launch a mobile application which will alert beachgoers when a certain area is becoming overcrowded to help maintain social distancing.

According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, Portugal has suffered 30,788 cases of COVID-19 and 1,330 deaths.
