These images show a mattress which was burned in fire which sparked when a phone charger was left plugged in without a device attached.

The incident occurred Parquesol of the city of Valladolid, in the north-central Spanish region of Castilla y Leon after firefighters were called as a huge plume of smoke had taken control of the courtyard and stairs of the block of flats.

Local media report 15 firefighters went into the building and up to the fourth floor where they found a mattress on fire.

The Head of the Fire Brigade, who has not been named, told reporters: “It (the mattress) burnt after a mobile phone charger without the mobile phone attached began burning when it was on the bed.”

According to official sources, nobody was injured in the fire and it was extinguished in an hour but firefighters posted pictures of the damaged caused by the charger, the brand of which has not been reported.

Local media report that there is a risk of fire not only from the accumulation of heat but also from short-circuits.

Non-official chargers which do not have the proper security guarantees are more likely to cause fires, according to reports.
