This is the moment a pedicab driver carrying 1 tonne of steel bars is crushed by the cargo breaking 12 of his ribs in the process.

The unnamed businessman from the town of Longjiang, which is in Foshan City in East China’s Fujian Province, had stacked the dozens of lengthy reinforced steel bars on top of his pedicab.

Footage shows him riding through the town and barely able to see under the cargo when part of his pedicab breaks and the rebars crush him from above on the morning of 13th June.

Distressed witnesses come to his aid, but it takes more than a dozen people to lift away some of the steel bar bundles, which police say had a combined weight of over 1 tonne.

Footage of his rescue shows the pedicab driver lying motionless on his handlebars after the metal is lifted off him.

The police said he was tended to by arriving paramedics who later took him to hospital for treatment.

He broke 12 ribs during the ordeal but was not in any life-threatening condition, the authorities said.

It is unclear whether the driver, whose family runs a local rebar and concrete business, faces any punishment for overloading his pedicab.
