A mutant chick that stunned its farmer owner after being born with four legs will have the surplus limbs removed by vets.

The chick is reportedly undergoing treatment at the Veterinary Faculty of the Hatay Mustafa Kemal University in the district of Hassa in the southern Turkish province of Hatay.

Farmer Selahattin Kahi discovered the chick while clearing out the coop and he took it to the university veterinary faculty for inspection.

Dr Cafer Tayer Isler said that they will hopefully remove the two extra legs when it is strong enough to cope with the procedure.

He added: “During the examination, we realised that the chick has walking difficulties and cannot stand up properly. Due to the extra legs putting weight on its backside, it is unable to balance itself.”

“The rare defect is known as ‘polymelia’ and it occurs in one in 1,000 or even 10,000 cases.

“With regards to livestock, such cases are rarely reported because economic factors take priority. For this reason, we cannot calculate the exact number of cases.”

Dr Isler confirmed that the four-legged chick is being kept under observation and will hopefully be operated on soon.
