The girl born prematurely with an undisclosed congenital condition is believed to have been smothered to death by her mum and dad before they hid the body in the playground.

Police in Panyu District in Guangzhou, capital of China’s southern province of Guangdong, were called to the residential community known as Clifford Estates on 21st February.

Residents in the gated community had reported finding the corpse of an infant girl in the ground at a children’s play area.

Investigators and medical examiners uncovered the body of the small child who was subsequently pronounced dead.

Authorities identified the girl’s parents, Mr Xu and Ms Zhang, both 24, as main suspects and detained them for questioning.

According to the police, the couple explained their daughter’s premature birth and congenital condition, and allegedly admitted to smothering her to death by covering her mouth and nose.

They allegedly committed the crime after a “discussion”, the authorities added.

Mr Xu and Ms Zhang, who are natives of the provinces of Sichuan and Shaanxi, remain in custody as investigations into the killing continue.

Investigators did not say what condition the girl suffered from.
