The Mexican authorities have arrested this cartel leader in a shootout as he was wanted for executing cops and he was previously one of the most-wanted men in Tennessee.

Gregorio Rosas Arenas, alias Wester, was arrested in the town of Cruz Tetela, in the municipality of Omealca, in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz by officers of the Civil Force, the elite unit of the local Public Security Secretariat.

Arenas is reportedly a local leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most dangerous cartels, and he was arrested when the officers stopped the Nissan NP300 he was travelling in.

Local media report Arenas got out of the car and opened fire on the cops. However, when he realised he was surrounded he gave himself up and was arrested.

The arresting officers reportedly found an M4 New Frontier assault rifle in the vehicle along with ammunition and 25 ‘doses’ of marijuana.

Arenas is accused of being involved in blackmailing, robbery, racketeering and the execution of municipal police officers in Tezonapa. The number of officers who were killed has not been reported.

He was previously arrested on 30th July in Tennessee for the murder of Albertano Guerrero Trejo, 29, in the city of McMinnville in the same state. He had been named on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Top Ten Most Wanted List but it is unclear if the case ever reached trial.
